L'Orchestre National de Jazz a été créé en 1986 par le ministère de la Culture. En plus de trois décennies, cette prestigieuse institution a largement participé à la légitimation institutionnelle et culturelle du jazz, notamment en offrant un vaste panorama de la création française. L’orchestre a vu se succéder 11 directeurs musicaux et artistiques, a accueilli près de 200 solistes, produit 32 albums et reçu de nombreuses récompenses dont les Victoires du Jazz en 2009 et en 2020. Depuis 2019, l'ONJ est dirigé par le compositeur Frédéric Maurin qui a élaboré un projet de grande ouverture pour l'orchestre à travers des commandes et des collaborations avec de nombreux artistes, des programmes pour le jeune public, un orchestre de jeunes et de nombreuses initiatives en matière d'éducation artistique et culturelle. Chaque programme privilégie l'expérimentation des formes et des formats, et intègre des musiciennes et musiciens français et internationaux de toutes générations.
