“That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace” (KJV) “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; That our daughters may be as pillars, sculptured in palace style” (NKJV) This verse (and our name) is a prayer, a wish, a desire that God may bless us so that our sons and daughters—our young people—may grow up, not only healthy, but thriving, flourishing, strong, and beautiful. Physically, but most especially spiritually. This Psalm lets us know that this doesn’t happen automatically or by our own effort. Psalm 144 is a Psalm about God as a warrior God, who protects, delivers, and shields us (verses 1-2), and who defeats our enemies for us (verses 5-11). The Bible elsewhere describes our greatest enemies: Sin (in us, and in the world), death, and the devil. And this Psalm is an admission—also a declaration—that we ultimately need God to fight this fight for us (see also verses 3
