1947 gegründet, wurde das WDR Sinfonieorchester in seinen frühen Jahren durch Dirigenten wie Joseph Keilberth, Hans Rosbaud und Sir Georg Solti geformt. Erster Chefdirigent war Christoph v. Dohnányi (1964 bis 1969). Die Entwicklung zum international renommierten Klangkörper verbindet sich vor allem mit Gary Bertini (1983-1991), der das WDR Sinfonieorchester zu einem führenden Sachwalter der Sinfonien Gustav Mahlers machte. Von 1997-2010 schärfte Semyon Bychkov das Profil des Orchesters weiter in Richtung Romatik und klassische Moderne. Seit 2010 ist Jukka-Pekka Saraste Chefdirigent des WDR Sinfonieorchesters. Der finnische Maestro rückte die Musik von Jean Sibelius stärker in den Fokus; neben einem gefeierten Brahms-Zyklus zählen suggestive Darstellungen der Werke Strawinskijs und Schönbergs zu den Höhepunkten der gemeinsamen Arbeit. Unter seiner Leitung hat das WDR Sinfonieorchester mehrere preisgekrönte CD-Einspielungen vorgelegt, die in der Fachpresse höchstes Lob erhielten.
