A devoção a Nossa Senhora do Pilar foi trazida pelos bandeirantes que aqui se fixaram em fins do século XVI. Já em 1704 atuava como Pároco o Padre Manuel de Almeida; em 8 de dezembro de 1713, o Arraial Novo de Nossa Senhora do Pilar foi elevado a Vila com o nome de São João del-Rei, e em 1724, a paróquia tornou-se colativa. Em 1960 com a criação da Diocese de São João del-Rei, a Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar foi elevada a Catedral e em 1965 recebeu o título de Basílica Menor.
