O Programa de Iniciação Científica Jr. (PIC) realiza-se por meio de uma rede nacional de professores em polos distribuídos no país -- situados em escolas e universidades - nos quais operam professores universitários e outros em programa especialmente desenhado para os alunos que receberam medalhas na OBMEP do ano anterior. Esses alunos também têm acesso a um fórum virtual, elaborado pela OBMEP, no qual, com ajuda de coordenadores e monitores, realizam tarefas complementares às aulas presenciais. O material didático é preparado especialmente para os alunos nos diferentes níveis de participação.
