E' senz'altro una delle compagnie teatrali amatoriali più antiche di Catania,a tenerla in piedi per tutti questi anni dei veri "amanti del teatro".Gente che non fa il teatro per vivere,ma vive per il tearo!Il gruppo teatrale nasce nel 1968 per merito del suo fondatore Luzzu Maugeri,con la denominazione "Gruppo d'Arte Liotru", solo dal 1983, tuttavia, assume l'odierna denominazione "Associazione culturale artistica teatrale Compagnia Liotru".I primi anni di attività teatrale si svolsero presso il teatro della Compagnia ubicato in via Tezzano ma, in seguito, la necessità di rivolgersi a una platea sempre più vasta indirizzò il gruppo verso palcoscenici maggiormente consoni di Catania e provincia(Teatro Valentino,Teatro Grotta Smeralda,Teatro Metropolitan e Teatro Saba di Acireale).Attualmente la compagnia usufruisce dei locali del Teatro Don Bosco presso l'Istituto Salesiano"San Francesco di Sales".In trent'anni la compagnia ha messo in scena oltre duecento spettacoli.
