Lila Downs es una cantante, compositora, productora, actriz y antropóloga de origen méxico-americano. Desde los ocho años Downs se desarrolló como artista, interpretando rancheras y canciones tradicionales de su estado natal, Oaxaca. A la edad de catorce años se muda a EE.UU. y empieza a estudiar música en Los Ángeles para posteriormente estudiar Antropología en la Universidad de Minnesota. En 1989 comienza su carrera artística como vocalista del grupo Los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi junto a Paul Cohen. Pero no es hasta 1994 que logra grabar su primer álbum como solista: Ofrenda, una obra que contiene temas tradicionales mexicanos cantados en español, mixteco y zapoteco, lo cual marcaría para siempre su línea musical. Su influencia en la cultura popular mexicana ha quedado ha quedado ilustrada en lugares como El Salón Tenampa, en la CDMX.
