La agrupación se formó en 1958 en Paysandú, Uruguay y contaba con seis miembros. Inicialmente se autodenominaron los “Blue Kings” ya que en esa época estaban de moda los nombres en inglés; pero un profesor de música del colegio donde ellos asistian en Paysandú les dijo que optaran por un nombre en español, luego adoptaron el nombre de “Los Iracundos”, idea de Leo Banéz cuando ingresaron a la poderosa disquera RCA VICTOR. Eduardo Franco (vocalista, compositor y arreglador), Juan Carlos Velázquez (director, baterista y arreglador), Leonardo Franco (primera guitarra), Juan “Bosco” Zabalo (segunda guitarra), Hugo Burgueño (bajo electrónico y coros) y Jesús María Febrero (teclados) conformando así los seis integrantes originales de la agrupación.
