Das 1967 gegründete MPIA ist eines von rund 80 Instituten der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Deutschlands größter Organisation für Grundlagenforschung. Neben der Wissenschaft ist der Bau von High-Tech-Messinstrumenten für die größten Teleskope auf der Erde oder im Weltraum ein wichtiges Betätigungsfeld am Institut. Darüber hinaus ist das MPIA sehr im Bereich Öffentlichkeitsarbeit engagiert - u.a. durch das Haus der Astronomie auf dem Campus des Instituts.
