Ziemia Ognista w Ameryce Południowej była celem pierwszej, salezjańskiej misji. Grupa 10 misjonarzy wyruszyła tam w 1875r. Dziś salezjanie są obecni w ponad 130 krajach świata - poza Europą są w Afryce, na obu kontynentach amerykańskich, w Australii i na wyspach Oceanii oraz w Azji. Salezjański Ośrodek Misyjny (SOM) powstał we wrześniu 1981 r. Od 1991 r. działa w domu przy ul. Korowodu 20 w Warszawie. Jest instytucją o charakterze ogólnopolskim, koordynuje działalność misyjną polskich inspektorii salezjanów oraz zapewnia pomoc materialną i duchową misjom (program Adopcji na Odległość, Duchowa Adopcja Misjonarza, realizacja projektów misyjnych).
