Zmiany, jakie dotknęły Rycerstwo po soborze, zupełnie zmieniły jego charakter. Przemilczano główny cel M.I. — nawracanie grzeszników, heretyków, schizmatyków, a zwłaszcza masonów. Zniknął bojowy duch, towarzyszący niegdyś zmaganiom Kościoła wojującego. Umniejszona została rola Niepokalanej. Dlatego w roku 2000 Przełożony Generalny Bractwa Świętego Piusa X zezwolił na przywrócenie M.I. w jej pierwotnym kształcie, tak jak ją założył i prowadził sam św. Maksymilian. Rycerstwo Niepokalanej Tradycyjnej Obserwancji ma za cel ochronę autentycznego dziedzictwa św. Maksymiliana i wierność nieskażonej, niezmiennej wierze katolickiej.
