Near Dark entstand 1988 aus einem kreativen Impuls von Ernst Meerbeck, unserem Gründer. Damals rauchte man in Deutschland meist noch aus Eimern, Cola Dosen und selbst gebastelten Pfeifen – während sich in den USA schon eine bemerkenswerte Bong-Kultur auf hohem Genussniveau entwickelte. Ernst wollte sich irgendwann nicht mehr mit Eimern zufrieden geben und fing an, Bongs selber zu entwickeln. Er startete zunächst mit dem Headshop Near Dark in Bonn und danach in Dortmund. Zu der Zeit importierte er auch erste Bongs aus dem Ausland. Schnell fanden die Geräte reißenden Absatz und es wurde klar: Near Dark geht als Großhändler ins B2B-Geschäft und versorgt die breite Masse der deutschen Stoner über den Einzelhandel mit ausgefallenen Smoking Paraphernalia und weiterem Zubehör.
