The battle that ensues is truly exciting, and is measured in thousandths of an inch! Some of these locks are quite sophisticated, and are not designed by one, but literally teams of some of the brightest minds in the industry. What a thrill to be up against such ingenuity! Also, the thrill is not all about the defeat, but simply marveling at the complexity of some of these beautiful mechanisms. ............the PEACE . . 1:00am - A pitch black room. Lightning intermittently illuminates it. Heavy rain hits the window. Long, rolling thunder overhead. Setting at my desk in front of the window, I take several deep breaths, and begin feeling and fumbling my way from lock to lock. Some open... some do not. As my eyes adjust to the darkness, I close them. 3:00am - I emerge and realize the last couple hrs (which felt like 20 mins.) were some of the most "at peace" moments I've ever had. ............the STIGMA . . When I speak of lockpicking as a hobby/study, the various reactions I receive are entertaining to say the least. Some are indignant while others are intrigued. Often times, I'm met with a sly grin (as if they know what I'm really up to) lol. It seems most people inevitably equate lockpicking with crime. Granted, this may be true to an extent, but the fact of the matter is this - The vast majority of career criminals, if asked, would tell you they've never picked a lock. Why? Too many easier, more efficient methods of entry exist, that will better serve the average thief. ............the SERVICE . . To the contrary, lockpicking enthusiasts, I believe, actually provide a service to the community. We can help improve 'high-end' locks & expose 'low-end' locks. By publicly exploiting vulnerabilities that exist, we provide awareness to consumers & manufacturers alike. Some companies are genuinely concerned with the quality of their products & the security they provide. They're not only open-minded enough to listen, but are willing to reinvest the time & money required to rectify possible flaws. Other companies, however, seem to be concerned only with the bottom line. Without a doubt, these companies are fully aware of the inherent weaknesses found within their locks.
