La costruzione del Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi fu deliberata dal Consiglio Comunale di Salerno il 15 dicembre 1863, su proposta dellallora Sindaco Matteo Luciani. Il Teatro fu inaugurato il 15 aprile 1872 con la rappresentazione del Rigoletto; il 27 marzo 1901 il Teatro fu intitolato a Giuseppe Verdi, morto il primo gennaio dello stesso anno. Reso inagibile dal terremoto del 1980, il Teatro è rimasto chiuso per quasi 14 anni. A quella Prima Stagione Lirica ne seguiranno altre ogni anno, 10 anni di musica, ininterrottamente, sempre con larghi consensi di pubblico e critica. Nel 2008 in occasione del decennale, la nomina di un direttore artistico del calibro di Daniel Oren, che conferisce alla lirica del teatro Verdi la giusta risonanza internazionale.
