In attempting this, students and others can gain a deeper understanding of martial arts " beyond the physical" elements. The three fundamental ideas upon which Ho Oo Ryu was founded are self-betterment,self-protection, and self-awareness. These relate to the three fundamental underpinnings of what makes a whole human: mental, physical, and spiritual. This eternal verity (trinitarian unity) has been expressed and affirmed by great Asian minds from the poet Basho to such wise philosophers as Buddha, Gandhi, and Gichin Funakoshi. A balanced life include all three.
