Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert wird in Mannheim Theater gespielt. Insbesondere das Wirken Schillers und auch die Verbindung zu Mozart prägen bis heute die Arbeit am NTM. Es steht einerseits für Tradition und andererseits für die Weiterentwicklung künstlerischer Ausdrucksformen. Als das Flaggschiff der Mannheimer Kulturszene ist das Vierspartenhaus nicht nur während der zweijährlich stattfindenden Schillertage und des Mozartsommers allgegenwärtig. Hervorragende künstlerische Leistungen, Ur- und Erstaufführungen sowie eine beispielhafte Kinder- und Jugendarbeit machen es überregional zu einer der bedeutendsten Bühnen Deutschlands. Davon zeugen jährlich über 1300 Vorstellungen für ca. 330.000 Besucher genauso wie eine überregionale Berichterstattung. In jeder Spielzeit stehen in den vier Sparten Oper, Schauspiel, Tanz sowie im Jungen Nationaltheater und der Mannheimer Bürgerbühne ca. 40 Premieren und 65 Wiederaufnahmen auf dem Spielplan.
