Sie pflegt dabei das Zusammenwirken verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen, veranstaltet regionale Tolkien Tage, das bundesweite Tolkien Thing, eine jährliche Tolkien-Konferenz, Vorträge und Ausstellungen und veröffentlicht neben der Mitgliederzeitschrift Der Flammifer von Westernis auch das akademische Jahrbuch Hither Shore, das schon zweimal den Deutschen Phantastik Preis in der Kategorie Sekundärwerk gewonnen hat. Mit dem Tolkien Seminar veranstaltet die DTG die einzige jährlich stattfindende wissenschaftliche Tolkien-Konferenz weltweit.
