Sie ist die einzige unabhängige Lobby-Organisation für Pflegebedürftige und schwerstkranke Menschen in Deutschland. Sie kämpft bundesweit für deren Rechte sowie gegen Willkür und Kostendruck im Gesundheitswesen. Sie vertritt diese Patienten gegenüber Politik, Krankenkassen und Leistungserbringern (Ärzte, Krankenhäuser, Pflege-Dienste, -Heime). Die Stiftung ist seit ihrer Gründung 1995 eine unabhängige, überkonfessionelle und überparteiliche Stiftung bürgerlichen Rechts. Als gemeinnützig und mildtätig anerkannt, finanziert sie sich ausschließlich aus Beiträgen ihrer über 55.000 Mitglieder und Förderer. Die Geschäftsstelle der Stiftung ist in Dortmund ansässig. Außerdem gibt es Informationsbüros in Berlin und München. An allen Standorten ist das Team multiprofessionell aufgestellt. Die Patientenschützer kommen aus den Bereichen Medizin, Pflege und Recht.
