La Red Iberoamericana de Investigadores sobre Globalización y Territorio (RII) fue creada por un grupo de investigadores participantes en un seminario realizado en 1994 en Pereira (Colombia), animados por el propósito de dar continuidad y ampliar el estudio y el análisis de las transformaciones territoriales y urbanas que se estaban produciendo bajo el impacto del proceso de globalización en diversos países iberoamericanos. Desde entonces, incluyendo el evento fundacional, la RII ha realizado dieciséis seminarios internacionales, los cuales se llevaron a cabo en Pereira (Colombia, 1994); Santiago (Chile, 1995); La Rábida (España, 1996); Bogotá (Colombia, 1998); Toluca (México, 1999); Rosario (Argentina, 2001); Camagüey (Cuba, 2002); Rio de Janeiro (Brasil, 2004); Bahía Blanca (Argentina, 2006); Querétaro (México, 2008); Mendoza (Argentina, 2010); Belo Horizonte (Brasil, 2012); Salvador (Brasil, 2014); Monterrey (México, 2016), Santiago (Chile, 2018) y Blumenau (Brasil, 2020).
