En 1574, tan solo cuatro años después de comenzar la edificación del Escorial, Felipe II organizó un grupo de niños para que se criasen y educasen en el Moansterio de San Lorenzo. Estos niños tenían la obligación de cantar cada día la "Misa del Alba", la primera que se celebraba cada mañana en la Basílica del Escorial. En la actualidad los PP. Agustinos continúan manteniendo tan interesante institución cultural. En la actualidad 46 chicos, de 9 a 15 años componen la Escolanía del Escorial y residen en el famosísimo Monasterio de El Escorial.
