La Federación de Peñas Sportinguistas, recogiendo la inquietud de los fieles seguidores del Real Sporting desde hacia varios años antes, se constituyó oficialmente el día 17 de Mayo de 1967. Su primer presidente fué Don Armando Álvarez durante cuyo mandato nació la feliz idea de crear un trofeo que recibió el nombre de "MOLINÓN DE PLATA" con la intención de premiar anualmente al jugador más destacado de cada temporada y que sería elegido por votación de todas las peñas sportinguistas.
