În mai bine de jumătate de secol, TVR a strâns - în imagini alb-negru şi color - frânturi de istorie. Prin ele, milioane de români au trăit la unison emoţii: mândrie, bucurie, tristeţe, îngrijorare, speranţă. Prima emisie a Televiziunii Române a fost pe 31 decembrie 1956 cu prilejul Revelionului. În perioada regimului comunist, televiziunea publică a avut o perioadă de creștere. În anii '70 erau două canale cu emisie aproape permanentă, dar în anii '80, Ceauşescu a decis reducerea orelor de emisie ajungându-se astfel la un singur canal care transmitea două ore pe zi. TVR oferă publicului acces la imaginile de arhivă, în diferite scopuri, conform regulamentelor interne şi conform legislaţiei în vigoare.
