Artists Talk is an ongoing series of artist interviews with early-career Australian artists. Produced primarily as a learning and teaching resource for undergraduate art students at Sydney College of Arts, the interviews can also be beneficial to students and art enthusiasts beyond the university environment. The objective of the first seven interviews was to expose undergraduate students in studio-based disciplines to the unseen aspects of art practice. Students usually encounter artworks once they are finished and presented in the gallery. Rarely are they exposed to the processes, experiments and failures of artists in their studios, they are even less likely to be exposed to the thinking of ‘early-career’ artists – artists in the first ten years of practice. In Artists Talk, we asked specific questions designed to reveal what occurs ‘behind the scenes’ and address what is often the most elusive knowledge to share.
