Carlos Mario Aguirre creó El Águila Descalza en 1980. Fundó su primera sede en 1984, una pequeña habitación en su apartamento del barrio Laureles en Medellín, con capacidad para 7 espectadores. En 1985 ingresa al grupo Cristina Toro. Con ella inaugura una nueva sede en el barrio Laureles con capacidad para 25 espectadores, con el estreno de Boleros en su ruta en 1985, se amplía la sede para dar cabida a 50 espectadores. En marzo de 1986 se estrena País paisa, cuyo éxito proyecta al grupo en el ámbito nacional e internacional. Su sede en la ciudad de Medellín, desde el 2000, es una bella mansión, patrimonio arquitectónico de la ciudad, con capacidad para 460 espectadores donde se ofrece programación permanente. Durante estos 35 años de existencia del grupo se han realizado más de 30 montajes teatrales, más de 25 giras nacionales y alrededor de 15 giras internacionales, se han producido 17 obras en formato de DVD.
